The Voyeur Gods

The Voyeur Gods

A temple arises from the salted flats of earth
An artificial construct of recorded humanity
A Church of the Unwilling, Unknowing
Resurrected by Fear and Insanity

Worship our deity, come let us pray
Let the angels of technology show us this day
While our Gods remain all seeing and intrusive
We pray we stay on this side of abusive

Does fear demand acceptance? Apathy form abidance?
These are not questions asked for our supreme guidance
Let the Shepard deliver by what he knows true
Knowledge, acceptance, images of you

And as we live we die, take leave of this earth
For death is only a part of our birth
I rejoice in knowing of my new immortality
My essence, my soul, preserved artificiality

So Voyeur Gods I pray to thee
All knowing in what I say, what I see
For now I lay me down to sleep
I pray my soul, my life, you’ll keep.

  1. Pretty dark, Captain. I think the darkness is so necessary to provide the light… thx for the comparison David! (well, to me… LOL)

I thought about this idea last night. I had heard of a DNA bank and got to thinking about it’s implications. Then I combined that thought with a huge data bank, such as the one being built in Utah by the NSA.

So I thought… would this create a new digital “immortality”, a computerized Heaven in a sense? And if you accept that notion, then would the “owners” of that “Heaven” become the “Gods” of our existence. In a way, don’t we as a society worship technology already? Paying our tithe for each new generation of 4G or whatever.. allowing it to “enrich” our lives… or enhance who we are as a society?

Who are we allowing to be “all seeing and knowing” these days, where before that used to be the sole domain of deities of religion? If the old God judged for good and bad deeds.. always omnipresent, isn’t that sort of like what the NSA is trying to do now days?

I wrote some on the subject but I feel that it didn’t give the concept its due. I think a whole Sci-Fi short story could be developed on the concept.

Dark subject.. yes. But there are many unanswered questions as to what the internet, digital capabilities, and privacy of society that go unanswered. In the future, will there even be an “individual” in the classic sense of the term. Does complete surveillance even allow for “Free Will” and will future societies deem the individual is just too much of a risk?

    • On that, the lack of our awareness of what the internet is capable of… I agree. Seems to me the ‘complete surveillance’ question is like being in prison… the ZEN would indicate we do have free will … perhaps even after we, doubtless will in the future, plug directly in.

I can’t get this observation out of my head. I just want to know if you’re planning to write that short story.
